There is documentary evidence for the existence of a brass band in Appleby as far back as 1855 and in 1858 Appleby Brass Band led the St Peters Day Rushbearing parade at Warcop.
Other references to Appleby Silver Prize Band have been found and the history from this period onwards is currently being researched.

This included in order, 1000 children from Appleby and the surrounding parishes, a cavalry band 200 oddfellows, the Dufton Band, over 100 Foresters, and the Alston Band. Finally, the Appleby band preceeded the main party"
1890 - The Westmorland Gazette, on the 19th of July 1890, reported under the heading Appleby Brass Band -
"This newly re-organised band played a choice selection of music in the Main Street of Appleby on Wednesday Evening, under the leadership of J.H.Parkin".
1894 -
"At a public meeting held in July 1894 a Mr Leach proposed the formation of a golf club. Brackenber Moor had been thought of as a suitable place but that was too far away from the town. The only other place was Minsceugh. The rent of the Land he thought would be reasonable and the ground could be kept in order for £30 a year. The Reverend Canon Matthews said the instruments belonging to the town band might be sold and the money used for something useful."
1905 - A poster from the N W Agricultural Society's 15th Annual Show announced:
"The Appleby Prize Band will be in attendance"
